Our Trip To Visit My In-laws
Every year around my mother in-law’s birthday we visit my wife’s parents. This has been going on for some time now and every year there is something that happens on the way there. Her parents live about a few hours away, but the preparation for the trip, the travel, and arrival all becomes complicated at one point or another. In fact, we have planned ahead this time to avoid any unnecessary headaches.
For instance, the past few years we have had some type of accident. In fact, on our very first trip we got a flat tire. That should have been warning enough. On another trip, we lost her mother’s birtday gift. In actuality, we think it was stolen while we ducked into a convenience store to get some coffee for the road. Last year, my black sport watch was shattered. This happened as I was pulling our luggage through the door while leaning on the door frame. My wife decided to slam the door shut hitting my watch.
So, for my birthday, she got me a shiny new men’s sport watch. It’s a bit bulky but works great and can take a pounding. This time we packed and stored our belongings in the car the night before. Also, we had her mother’s gift directly sent to her home. We also had our car checked out and were thoroughly prepared. Also, we joined a twenty four hour car service that guarantees assistance within two hours anywhere.
We were prepared this time around, or so we thought. We had made our coffee in the morning and poured it into our travel mugs. We had mapped out the most safest and efficient route to their home. We got up bright and early and began our journey.
Our route was a two part adventure. The first portion would involve driving through the suburbs to reach the freeway. The freeway would consume most of the driving time. Her parent’s home is about hundred and twenty or so miles from ours.
It took a bit longer than expected to reach the expressway. However, once we were on, the traffic was light. The number of cars on the road was very sparse. There seemed to be mostly weekend travelers either going or coming from some leisure destination. One truck appeared to be on its way to ski slopes as it had skis secured to its roof.
In order to be safe, we were going at the recommended speed limit. However, the ski truck was driving more aggressively. The driver was changing lanes in order to find more open space. He seemed in a hurry. He quickly passed us and seemed like he was going twice our speed. After a few seconds, I noticed a dark object suddenly appear flying for our windshield. It was round in shape and small in size. The closer it got the easily we could make out its composition. The object was a giro ski helmet.
